Curriculum Vitae

My name is Michael Holzmann and I was born in 1969 in Attnang-Puchheim (Upper Austria). At the age of ten I started playing the cello, a decision that proved key to my future life, and succeeded in winning competitions such as “Jugend musiziert”. After finishing grammar school, I began my studies of the cello with Prof. Wilfried Tachezi at Mozarteum Salzburg.

In 1993, halfway my studies and having finished my first diploma, I came to Vienna to join the class of Prof. Wolfgang Herzer (principal cellist of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) at the Musikhochschule Wien. I always tried to get as much practical experience as possible; during my studies in Vienna I had the pleasure to join the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a substitute. I graduated from the Musikhochschule Wien with Magister artium, the topic of my thesis was: “Enlightenment, Revolution und Heroims“, on the personality and work of L. v. Beethoven.

Alongside my career as a performer, I became interested in music management, so I started a music festival in Upper Austria. As a musician and cellist I also founded various ensembles like the TRIO IMPOSSIBILE and the WIENER SALONIKER. For these ensembles I organized concert-tours to Mexico, England (London), to Lithuania, to Turkey, to Poland, to South America and to the Middle East.

At the beginning of 2002 I started my own artists’ agency called HOLZMANN ARTS. There have already been interesting cooperations with famous artists such as Heinrich Schiff, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, or various ensembles taken from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

However I did not let go of my own playing: I was part of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz (contract) from 2000 to 2005 as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006 and 2007.
